The government extended the deadline for re-registering weapons in the National Weapons System (Sinam) to May 3, according to a decree published this Wednesday morning (29) in the Federal Official Gazette (see full text).

The deadline would end in April, but it was extended for “better adequacy of the Federal Police in carrying out the re-registration activity assigned to the police agency, considering the continental dimensions of the country”, according to the National Secretariat of Public Security (Senasp).

Minister Flávio Dino, of Justice, stated that the number of weapons already re-registered is greater than those originally registered in the official systems. According to him, “those who said that we wanted to re-register to confiscate weapons, in fact we are helping people who were illegally come to the light of the law. So much so that we have more weapons re-registered than weapons that were previously on Sigma.”

Sigma is a system that registers weapons on behalf of Hunters, Shooters and Collectors (CACs) maintained by the Army, while Sinam is aimed at registering civilian weapons maintained by the Federal Police. According to the ministry, the current registration started in February will centralize the registration of weapons in the PF system.
