If convicted, the former right-back could remain in prison for up to 15 years
The trial of former Brazilian national team defender Daniel Alves in Spain on charges of sexual assault has been scheduled for February 5th to 7th, the Catalan high court said on Wednesday (20).
Daniel Alves faces accusations of sexually assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub last December. He was arrested on January 20 and is being held in a prison on the outskirts of Barcelona.
If found guilty, the 40-year-old Brazilian could be sentenced to a prison sentence of 4 to 15 years. He claims he had consensual sexual relations with the accuser.
A Spanish prosecutor is seeking a nine-year prison sentence. He also asked for restraining orders for Daniel Alves and for him to pay compensation of 150,000 euros to the woman.
Daniel Alves is one of the most successful players in the history of football, having won more than 40 trophies in his career for the Brazilian national team and for clubs such as Barcelona, Sevilla, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain.
