Damares becomes a bet for evangelicals for 2026 – 07/17/2023 – Panel

Senator Damares Alves (Republicanos-DF) has become the bet of a wing of evangelical politicians to contest the 2026 presidential elections, given the current scenario of ineligibility of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

Damares’ entry into the race has a potential obstacle: the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, from the same party as Jair Bolsonaro’s former minister (PL).

However, according to parliamentarians, the party would not rule out the possibility of launching Damares due to the assessment that, even if she did not win the presidential race, it could help to expand the evangelical bench in Congress.

The incentive for Damares to participate in the election is anchored in the reading that the former minister has a very strong appeal among evangelicals, who represent more than 30% of the population.

“It’s a very good name because of the curriculum it has with evangelicals, Christians”, says deputy Cezinha de Madureira (PSD-SP), former leader of the evangelical group. “Several leaders have spoken her name because of her very consistent stance in the Senate. This and other items that accompany her trajectory are what give us the freedom to say that she is a feasible name, a viable name for the next elections.”

For deputy Eli Borges (PL-TO), former president of the evangelical parliamentary front, Damares is a good candidate. “But there will be no shortage of good names, especially because of the misguided policy of the current president [Lula]”.

Damares tells the Panel that serving eight years in office is what “is in her heart” right now. In March, to the newspaper O Globo, however, the senator asked not to be forgotten on the list for 2026.
