More than two-thirds of American adults said they had drunk coffee the day before, the highest level in more than 20 years, according to the National Coffee Association (NCA).

Daily coffee consumption has increased 37% since 2004, with the most recent increase driven by consumers over the age of 25, according to the Spring 2024 National Coffee Data Trends report. The biggest increase in consumption was among elderly people over 60 years old.

“America’s favorite beverage has only continued to grow in terms of overall popularity and innovation to meet consumers’ evolving tastes,” said NCA President William Murray in a press release.

75% of US adults drank coffee in the past week, a 4% increase from last year’s NCA report.

Consumer preferences for drinking and preparing coffee have also changed. The share of consumers who prefer ready-to-drink coffee on a daily basis is 15%, almost double the previous year, surpassing espresso machines to become the third most popular preparation method.

Using filter coffee makers and single-cup coffee makers remain the two most popular methods.

Meanwhile, specialty coffee continued to gain popularity, with 57% of U.S. adults drinking one in the past week, compared to 63% who had a traditional coffee.
