According to data from Antaq, the period had the best performance in the historical series for coastal and long-distance navigation, which includes exports and imports. Container transport reaches a record in Brazil Brazil broke a record in the movement of containers on ships, in the first two months of 2024. Growth in the port sector is 11.44%, in the month of February alone. The information is in the Waterway Statistics of the National Waterway Transport Agency (ANTAQ), a periodic publication that the agency releases this Thursday. The document was obtained exclusively by GloboNews and g1. The profile of goods transported by containers in Brazil includes industrialized products, and this signals that Brazilian industry is experiencing a period of recovery, according to Antaq. The month of January had already been positive for the waterway sector and the February result confirmed the trend. The number of containers transported is what drives the numbers up. In the first two months, navigation in the country transported 1.99 million containers, an increase of 18%. The performance is also a record in the three modalities that make up this indicator: imports, exports and cabotage. In imports, 677 thousand containers of the international standard size (20 feet long x 8 feet wide x 8 feet high) were transported in the period, an increase of 19% compared to the first two months of 2023; In exports, there were 660 thousand containers, an increase of 20%, on the same basis of comparison; For coastal shipping, which is carried out between the country’s ports, there were 662 thousand containers, an increase of 18%. Considering the month of February alone, the country handled 99.83 million tons of total cargo, compared to 89.58 million tons in February 2023. In addition to containers, an increase in solid and liquid cargo was recorded. The goods that stood out were iron ore (+17.85%), oil and derivatives (+16.23%) and soybeans (+19.70%). In relation to containerized cargo, this movement reached 11.2 million tons, an increase of 29.19% for the month, compared to February last year, and 24.5% in number of containers, on the same basis of comparison monthly. Of this total, 7.7 million tons were moved long-haul (imports and exports) and 3.4 million tons by cabotage. “We had some crops there that stood out, such as cotton, sugar and coffee. So, these goods, together with a return to industrial growth, were responsible for this growth in the first 2 months of the year. Now we will monitor to see if this trend is confirmed throughout the year”, says the general director of the national agency, Eduardo Nery. Antaq’s Waterway Statistician explains that the resumption of container movement takes into account the last four years. In 2021, the year of the pandemic, there was significant transport of goods using this modality. In 2022, a drop was observed. In 2023, performance stagnated at this level. And now, in 2024, the percentage increase has become significant again. Solid and liquid bulk Solid bulk, which represents 58.1% of the total of everything moved through ports, showed growth of 11.48% compared to February 2023. There were 58 million tons registered in February this year, with emphasis on for two main ones: iron ore and soybeans. Liquid bulk also showed an increase, reaching 7.47% compared to the same month in 2023. In turn, general cargo showed a decline of 1.53% during the month compared to February last year. Exports and Imports The movement of long-haul cargo, which considers Brazilian exports and imports, was 69.1 million tons in February 2024, a growth of 13.59% compared to the same period last year. Exports grew by 15.11%, while imports grew by 6.87%. The number of containers that departed or arrived from abroad in January and February this year shows that Brazil did more business with China, the European Union and North America than last year. There were 342 thousand containers, 231 thousand and 174 thousand, respectively. There was growth in the trade flow, in the number of containers, between Brazil and almost all blocks of countries, except Asia (without China), Southeast Asia and the Middle East. In the case of China, Brazil’s main trading partner, container movement in both directions grew by 38.5% compared to the first two months of 2023. Public and private ports Private Use Terminals (TUPs) registered 66.14 million tons in February 2024. The number represents an increase of 10.89% compared to the same period of the previous year. The highlight among the five TUPs that handled the most in the month was the Ponta da Madeira Maritime Terminal (MA), which recorded growth of 14.28%, with 10.65 million tons handled. Public ports handled 33.69 million tons in the second month of 2024. The number represents an increase of 12.55% compared to the same period of the previous year. The busiest port in the month was Santos, with 11.11 million tons, registering an increase of 32.42% compared to the same period in 2023. The port was responsible for 33% of all public port movement in the month . Inland navigation, however, fell 5.27% in February, reaching a movement of 6.68 million tons. Likewise, there was a decline in cargo operations carried out in port support (-9.42%) and maritime support (-3.53%).
