CPMI will not investigate the sale of jewelry or break Bolsonaro’s secrecy, says deputy

The president of the CPMI that investigates the acts of January 8 in Congress, federal deputy Arthur Maia (União Brasil-BA), said this Wednesday (23) that the commission will not include the case of jewelry and gifts received by Jair Bolsonaro (PL ) that would have been allegedly diverted from the public collection for sale in the United States.

The statement was given shortly after a meeting with the General Commander of the Army, General Tomás Miguel Ribeiro Paiva, at the Headquarters in Brasília. Maia scheduled a meeting with the military to explain how the committee was working and ask for the Force’s collaboration in the investigations.

According to Maia, the CPMI “will not go into the matter of corruption, the sale of jewelry, because this is not related to January 8th”. According to him, the advancement of the commission’s work on the question of the hacker Walter Delgatti, for example, would have nothing to do with the acts if there had not been an “action to discredit the electoral process that was already part of a plot to, discrediting the election, there is any anti-democratic act before or after the election”, discovered during the course of the investigation.

“Unless some connection arrives at the CPMI that can demonstrate some action of this nature, I don’t see the sense of breaking confidentiality just because he is the former President of the Republic”, he said.

Maia also said that a new investigation front will only be opened if, at some point, a link between the acts of January 8 and the case of the jewels is proven. “So, if you want to hold a CPI to discuss gifts from former presidents, the sale of Rolex, jewelry business, do another one”, he added.

In addition to denying the opening of a new work front at the CPMI for the acts of January 8, Arthur Maia stated that the meeting with the Army commander did not impact the testimonies of the military in the commission, both those that have already taken place and those that still will be summoned.

Maia assured that there was no pressure to call deponents or not, and emphasized that the Army’s concern is to clarify the facts and demonstrate commitment to democracy.

Among the expected testimonies is that of General Gonçalves Dias, who led the Institutional Security Office on the day of the attacks.
