The Municipal Council for Sustainable Rural Development of São Roque, in Greater São Paulo, expressed concern with the intention of the local government to revise the Master Plan, which could lead to an increase in the city’s urban sprawl.

An organ of the city hall itself, the Council said in a letter sent last week to other entities that the very concept of “rural zone” would be threatened if the project goes ahead.

“If it succeeds in approving the revision of the Municipal Master Plan, it is to be assumed that there will no longer be a need for a Municipal Council for Sustainable Rural Development in São Roque”, says the document, signed by the president of the body, Marília de Campos Orantas.

The Master Plan dates from 2006, and is undergoing an attempt to be revised. Opponents of the change say that São Roque, a city frequented by many São Paulo residents on holidays and weekends for its green areas, home to many farms and a wine route, would be disfigured

“The revision established by the City Hall will reduce the municipality’s rural area by more than 74% and will allow real estate agents in certain areas to build buildings up to four times larger than the size of the land, favoring speculation”, says Nelcy Del Grossi, anti-modification activist.

Opponents of the revision say the discussion is being rushed. This Tuesday (13), there will be an act in the city against the new Master Plan.

The Panel contacted the São Roque city hall, but did not receive a response until the publication of this note.
