CONMEBOL fined Libertad, from Paraguay, in US$ 105,000 for racist insults from fans to goalkeeper Everson, from Atlético-MG, during the match between the two teams for the last round of the group stage of the Libertadores Cup, in June, at Defensores del Chaco stadium.

The decision of Conmebol’s Disciplinary Commission, dated July 10, was released this Tuesday by the press in Paraguay, the country where the organization’s headquarters are located.

In the duel played on June 27, in Asunción, Libertad fans called Everson a “monkey”.

Specifically, Conmebol imposed the payment of US$ 100,000 as a fine to the Paraguayan club for the violation of article 15.2 of the Disciplinary Code, which punishes “any Member Association or club whose supporters insult or attack the human dignity of another person or group of people , by any means, on account of skin color, race, sex or sexual orientation, ethnicity, language, creed or origin”.

In addition, Libertad will have to pay US$ 5,000 for violating article 12.2 (b) of the code, which punishes “throwing objects”.

The Disciplinary Commission also ordered Libertad to implement measures aimed at its fans. For example, they must display a poster “Enough of Racism” during the start of the game protocol and include the same phrase on the stadium screen, except when sporting messages and competition commercials are displayed.

The club will also have to include this message in a campaign to be released on its social networks in the two days before the next home game.

In addition, the commission warned Libertad that, in case of repetition of this type of infraction, “the partial or total closure of the stadium for its next home match” could be ordered.

In that match, Galo and Libertad drew 1-1, which guaranteed the classification of the Brazilian team for the round of 16 of the Libertadores as second in group G and eliminated the Paraguayan team from the tournament.
