Congress will have pro-LGBTQIA+ rights front – 05/17/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

The Chamber of Deputies will receive this Wednesday (17) the protocol for the creation of the Parliamentary Front in Defense of Citizenship and Rights of the LGBTI+ Community. The initiative was authored by Erika Hilton (PSOL-SP) and already had the support of more than 210 deputies and senators when it was launched.

Founded on the International Day to Combat LGBTphobia, the collegiate will seek to promote and defend the rights of the LGBTQIA+ population in the country. Its articulators point out that, despite the demands made by the segment, Congress has never approved a law aimed at defending its interests.

The presidency of the mixed front will be occupied by Hilton, and the vice-presidency by federal deputy Daiana Santos (PC do B-RS), who declares herself as the first lesbian and black woman elected by Rio Grande do Sul.

“It is the first time that a parliamentary front will be chaired by a transvestite and vice-chaired by a lesbian woman, in addition to covering all segments of our diversity. This will allow us to guide the specificities of each group in a more effective and comprehensive way”, says Santos.
