Moro and other parliamentarians may also be impeached

With the recent decision of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) that annulled the mandate of federal deputy Deltan Dallagnol (Podemos-PR), other parliamentarians are also in the sights of the Electoral Justice. One of them is Senator Sergio Moro (União-PR).

Despite the TSE having denied a request for impeachment, submitted by the PT, PCdoB and PV, in December last year, Moro is the subject of an action at the Regional Electoral Court of Paraná (TRE-PR). It is a request presented by the PL, with the argument that the former judge would have practiced slush funds and abuse of economic power.

The process is in secrecy, but is based on the inconsistencies pointed out by the Electoral Accounts Coordination of the Regional Electoral Court (TRE) of Paraná in the accountability of Moro’s campaign. The coordination recommended the disapproval of the former judge’s electoral accounts. According to the PL, the case is similar to that of former senator Selma Arruda, who had her mandate revoked in 2020 for expenses without proper accounting, according to the TSE.

Last year, Moro spoke out about the request for the impeachment of the PL. According to him, “bad losers” decided to “work for the PT and for the corrupt”. “For my part, I fear nothing, because I know the fairness of my elections. Now, it’s amazing that there are people who can be so short. What they don’t get at the ballot box, they try on the mat,” he wrote.

At the TSE, Moro won after the Electoral Court denied the impeachment request, which claimed that he did not have a valid party affiliation in Paraná within the legal period. The decision considered Moro’s candidacy for the Senate valid. The risk of revocation of the mandate now depends on the decision of the TRE-PR.

A People’s Gazette got in touch with the Paraná senator’s office to find out if he fears the risk of impeachment, as in the case of Deltan Dallagnol, but the congressman said he will not comment.

On the specific case of Dallagnol, Moro said on Tuesday (16) that he was “appalled” by the TSE’s decision. “It is with great sadness that I receive information about the impeachment of Deltan Dallagnol’s federal deputy mandate. I am appalled to see outside Parliament an honest voice in politics that has always been in search of improvements for the Brazilian people. Lose politics. My solidarity with the voters of Paraná and the citizens of Brazil”, said the senator through social networks.

Deputies with impeachment requests in progress

Another congressman who is facing a request for the annulment of his diploma by the Electoral Public Ministry (MPE) is federal deputy Silas Câmara (Republicanos – AM). He will assume the coordination of the evangelical group starting next year.

Câmara is accused of illegally raising and spending on chartering aircraft during the 2022 election campaign, when he was re-elected. The parliamentarian appealed against the impeachment request through motion for clarification presented to the Regional Electoral Court of Amazonas. The impeachment trial has already been postponed three times.

In his defense in the process, Câmara alleged to the Electoral Court “that the aforementioned failures in the rendering of accounts under discussion are merely formal and do not indicate that there was abuse of economic power or fraud in the electoral process”.

Câmara was also the target of a lawsuit in the Federal Supreme Court (STF) that investigated the appropriation of part of the salary of former advisors, in the period from 2000 to 2001. The practice is also known as “rachadinha”. The case expired in December last year, after ministers André Mendonça and Dias Toffoli submitted a request for review. The rapporteur, Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, voted to condemn the deputy. The ministers: Edson Fachin, Cármen Lúcia, Rosa Weber and Alexandre de Moraes accompanied the understanding of the rapporteur. Nunes Marques disagreed with the majority and voted to nullify the investigation that led to the accusations.

In addition to him, federal deputy André Fernandes (PL-CE) also runs the risk of losing his mandate, if the STF accepts the requests of the Attorney General of the Republic and the PSOL. The accusation is that Fernandes allegedly incited the demonstrations that culminated in acts of vandalism on January 8. Fernandes published on social networks, two days before the attacks, a video with the title “act against the Lula government”, but soon after the depredations, he repudiated the vandalism. “Despite always defending the free manifestation of the people, I do not condone the depredation of public property”, he wrote on Twitter.

The inquiry against the Ceará parliamentarian was extended by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, on April 10, for another 60 days. Deputies Clarissa Tércio (PP-PE) and Sílvia Waiãpi (PL-AP) are also targets of the same action.
