Coffee from SP breaks record and sells for R$1,410/kg – 12/14/2023 – Café na Prensa

A batch of coffee grown by Orfeu in São Sebastião da Grama (about 250 km from São Paulo) broke a record and was sold for US$ 130.30/lb-weight, or R$ 84.5 thousand per bag of 60 kg, which corresponds to a value of R$1,410 per kilo of coffee.

As the lot consisted of three bags, the sale yielded a total of R$253.5 thousand (US$51,706.95).

This is the highest price ever paid in history for natural Brazilian coffee, surpassing the previous record (US$90.20/lb-weight), recorded in 2017.

This is the value of the green bean, which was acquired by the Japanese company Sarutahiko Coffee, which will roast and sell the coffee in Japan.

Part of this coffee, however, was kept in Brazil. Wanted by Coffee in the PressOrfeu said that the coffee should be offered to consumers in the first half of 2024. The company, however, has not yet provided details, such as the price at which it will be sold.

The coffee, grown at Fazenda Rainha, was sold during the auction held last week for the Brazilian edition of the Cup of Excellence — the largest quality competition in the world. On the occasion, the 30 best lots in the championship were offered, considered the Oscar of coffees.

WHY IS IT SO EXPENSIVE?

This record-breaking batch was the champion of the Cup of Excellence Brasil in the “Via Seca” category, which is intended for natural grains (harvested and dried with the shell).

It is from the prized geisha (or gesha) variety, a type of Arabica coffee that emerged in the village of Geisha, in Ethiopia – it is therefore not related to the geishas of Japanese culture.

It was in Panama, however, that this variety actually found fertile soil and achieved a quality recognized worldwide. Recently, it was introduced in Brazil.

Generally, this type of coffee produces a very aromatic drink, with floral notes and balanced acidity — attributes that are highly valued in the specialty coffee market.

The geisha variety also holds the record for the most expensive coffee in the world. It was established at an auction held in September 2022, when a lot from Panamanian producer Lamastus Family Estates was sold for an impressive US$6,034 (approximately R$30,000) per pound – or US$13,302 (approximately R$65,000). per kilo.

OTHER COFFEES SOLD FOR UP TO R$40.7 THOUSAND/BAG

The second highest bid in the Cup of Excellence Brazil 2023 auction was given to the champion of the “Via Úmida” category (peeled, pulped or demucilated cherry), produced at Fazenda Rio Verde (Ipanema Agrícola), in Conceição do Rio Verde (MG). This coffee was purchased by Grupo Cafeza, from Brazil, for R$40.7 thousand/bag (US$62.70 lb-weight), which yielded a total of R$101.6 thousand (US$20,734.26) for the entire batch.

The third highest bid was registered for the champion of the unprecedented “Experimental” category (fermented coffees). The product, also grown at Fazenda Rainha (Orfeu Cafés), was purchased for the equivalent of R$32,700 per bag by the company Decameron Coffee, from China, which provided a total of R$81,900 for the batch.

At the end of the auction, the 30 winning lots of the Cup of Excellence Brasil 2023 were purchased by companies from Germany, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, South Korea, the United States, Japan and Norway.
