Manaus (AM) – The concern with the construction of the new landfill in a Permanent Protection Area (APP) on the BR-174 was once again discussed at the Manaus City Council (CMM) this Monday morning (28).

This time, CMM received the head of the Municipal Environmental and Sustainability Secretariat (Semmas), Antonio Ademir Stroski; and the undersecretary of management of the Municipal Public Cleaning Secretariat (Semulsp), Altervi Moreira; in order to seek an understanding and outline solutions for the landfill problem.

The meeting was led by the president of the CMM, councilor Caio André (Podemos), who, together with the commission formed by 17 other councillors, reinforced the position of the House on the construction of the new landfill at the head of the Leão stream.

“We are seeking an understanding between the City Council of Manaus, and the Municipal Executive through its secretariats and the City Hall, so that we reach a solution, not a palliative one, but a solution for the garbage in the city of Manaus, and to prevent these pollutions keep happening, mainly in the Tarumã region”, said Caio André.

Other matters of public relevance were also mentioned during the meeting, and will be on the agenda of the CMM in the coming days.

“We are concerned about the construction of that landfill in a Permanent Preservation Area and also with the issue of invasions in the Tarumã region, which also ‘pushes’ in relation to the issue of floating land. This Tuesday (29) we have a Public Hearing to deal with this matter”, emphasized the president of CMM.

The Semmas secretary reinforces that it is time to seek an environmental solution regarding the construction of the new sanitary landfill.

“It is a challenge that is not just for the mayor, nor for the public cleaning team, it is a problem for the city. So this understanding, which the Chamber is positioning itself, including in a very proactive way, will help immensely in the solution”, said Antônio Stroski.

Last week, the House had already expressed its opinion about the construction of the new landfill. President Caio André stated that he would ask for clarification on the environmental licenses granted to the work, and that the CMM would make a representation to the Public Ministry of the State of Amazonas (MPE-AM) against the construction of a sanitary landfill.

“There is the problem of our current sanitary landfill, which has its days numbered, due to a court decision, so we want to know, the legislative power wants to know, what the City Hall’s solution for the disposal of our waste. So let’s not wait for plan B, we are in contact with a lawyer so that everything is clarified”, concludes Caio.

Councilors Dr. Eduardo Assis (Avante), Kennedy Marques (PMN), Jander Lobato (PP), Jaildo Oliveira (PCdoB), Marcelo Serafim (PSB), Lissandro Breval (Avante), Professor Samuel (PL), Wallace Oliveira (No party), Fransuá (PV), Raiff Matos (DC), Allan Campelo (Podemos), Marcel Alexandre (Avante), Professor Jacqueline (União Brasil), Elissandro Bessa (SD), Diego Afonso (União Brasil), Alonso Oliveira (Forward) and Gilmar Nascimento (Forward).
