Clube do Balanço pays homage to João Donato, Paulo Inglés and the pioneering DJ Seu Osvaldo on the album ‘Cadê Tereza?’

On their first album without founder Marco Mattoli, the São Paulo samba-rock group plays a new, original repertoire and, for the first time, entirely instrumental. Clube do Balanço releases the group’s first entirely instrumental album, ‘Cadê Tereza?’, with eight songs written by the band members Disclosure ♪ Two years ago, the death of Marco Mattoli (February 12, 1965 – August 7, 1922 ) caused Clube do Balanço to lose the leader and founder of this São Paulo samba-rock group formed in 1999. Even with the loss, life went on – as it always does – and Clube do Balanço continued on the dance floor and in the dance halls without the emeritus member , making the audience dance to the cadence of samba-rock, a genre that gained momentum throughout the 1970s on albums by Jorge Ben Jor and Luís Vagner (1948 – 1921). Clube do Balanço’s sixth album, the first without Marco Mattoli, Cadê Tereza? arrived on digital players on Thursday, February 29th, with eight instrumental songs. Yes, this is the first entirely instrumental album by the group formed by Edu Peixe Salmaso (drums), Fred Prince (percussion), Gringo Pirrongelli (bass), Maestro Tiquinho (trombone), Marcelo Maita (keyboards), Reginaldo 16 Ton (trumpet ) and Tereza Gama (voice). The graceful title Where’s Tereza? has a double meaning, as it alludes both to the samba of the same name composed by Jorge Ben Jor and given in 1969 to Os Originais do Samba – a group that was then releasing its first album, driven precisely by the success of Cadê Tereza? – as well as the discreet participation of singer Tereza Gama, lead singer of the group, in the recording of the song Que thing (Maestro Tiquinho), the first of the eight tracks on the album recorded with musical production by Bruno Bona. It is the first time that Bona orchestrates the production of a Clube do Balanço album. With a new and original repertoire recorded with the touches of guest musicians such as Dino Oliveira (percussion), Olegário Júnior (guitar), Sérgio Barba (cuíca), Walmir Borges (guitar) and Wilson Fumaça (percussion), the album Cadê Tereza? celebrates João Donato (1934 – 2023) in Samba a la Donato (Reginaldo 16 Ton), makes an ode to ballroom dancing in Roupa no varal (Maestro Tiquinho) – a track recorded with touches of gafieira and forró – and pays homage to the pioneering Brazilian DJ Osvaldo Pereira in The invisible orchestra by Seu Oswaldo (Gringo Pirrongelli). The album also includes a posthumous tribute to Paulo Roberto Santos (1934 – 2020), Paulo Inglés, a legendary figure in the black nightlife community in São Paulo, especially in the samba-rock and soul circuit. The tribute takes place on the theme Balanço para o Inglés, composed by the bassist of Clube do Balanço, Gringo Pirrongelli. The songs Cachorrada (Edu Peixe Salmaso), Frigobar (Marcelo Maita) and Presságio (Edu Peixe Salmaso) complete the repertoire of Cadê Tereza?, Clube do Balanço’s first album since Balanço da Quebrada (2019), a previous discography title that also includes the albums Swing & samba-rock (2001), Samba incrementado (2004), Pela contramão (2009) and Menina da window (2014).
