Manchester City (England) won the unprecedented title in the FIFA Club World Cup on Friday afternoon (22), by defeating Fluminense 4-0, at the King Abdullah Stadium, in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia). The score opened with a lightning goal after 40 seconds – the fastest in the history of the competition – scored by Argentine Julián Álvarez, who also sealed the victory. The second goal was an own goal by defender Nino and Folden scored the third.
The title won was the fourth in the career of Catalan coach Pep Guardiola, who became the coach with the most World Cup titles. He had already won the trophy twice with Barcelona (2009 and 2011) and also when he was in charge of Bayer Munich (2013). The victory in the World Cup final seals Guadiola’s victorious campaign last season (2002/23), when he won the Triple Crown: Champions League, Premier League (English Championship) and the FA Cup.
All it took was 40 seconds of the ball rolling for a lightning goal from Argentine Julián Alvarez to open the scoring for City at the King Abdullah Stadium. The play started after Marcelo’s wrong pass as the ball passed. Full-back Aké took advantage of the hesitation to risk a shot from outside the area, but the ball hit the post and fell to Álvarez, who chested it into the back of the net. After the scare, little by little Fluminense began exchanging passes and hitting the mark.
The Rio team’s best chance was in the 15th minute, with pressure from Cano on goalkeeper Ederson as the ball came out. Then Martinelli took action: he played to Ganso who found Cano inside the penalty area. Flu’s striker was going to shoot at goal, but was brought down by the goalkeeper. Referee Szymon Marciniak even awarded a penalty, but the assistant had already signaled Cano was offside. Marciniak went back and canceled the penalty.
However, City regained control of the match and invested in attacking moves from the left. In one of them, in the 26th minute, midfielder Rodri saw Foden ahead and slipped a perfect ball for the City midfielder to shoot accurately. In the first of them, he prevented Folden’s goal from the edge of the area, but the ball rebounded just enough for Bernardo Silva to head and, in the reflex, the Tricolor goalkeeper shone again, avoiding City’s third goal. Afterwards, with a free kick, Bernardo Silva raised it for Folden to shoot hard, but Fábio made another beautiful save.
After 14 minutes, coach Fernando Diniz replaced Ganso, Marcelo, and Felipe Melo with, respectively, Lima, Diogo Barbosa and Alexander. For a few minutes, Tricolor improved their marking, but it didn’t last long. At 26, after a free kick in favor of City, full-back Samuel Xavier missed the header, which was left for Argentine Álvarez to play for Folden to score his second of the game and the third for the British team. In one of Flu’s few chances, at 33, John Kennedy shot with the ball, dribbled around the marking and threw a bomb, but Brazilian Ederson, City’s goalkeeper, saved it for a corner. The day really belonged to City, who even managed to score the fourth goal with Julián Álvarez, with a low shot in the 42nd minute.
