Prominent Amazonian athlete celebrates Projeto Amazonas at the Paris 2024 Olympics

Manaus (AM) – The year 2023 was marked by good results for pre-Olympic athletes on the international stage. In this context, the Government of Amazonas reinforced its commitment to sport in the state by executing the Amazonas Project at the Paris 2024 Olympics, which offers support to 20 athletes from Amazonas who seek to secure their long-awaited Olympic spot.
“This project is tangible proof of our commitment to pushing our athletes forward and ensuring they are at the center of the global sporting stage. In the Wilson Lima government, we have given encouragement so that our athletes can build their legacy on the national and international sporting scene”, said the Secretary of State for Sports and Leisure (Sedel), Jorge Oliveira.
The Amazonas Project at the Paris 2024 Olympics has 20 athletes, 17 Olympians and 3 Paralympians, who together won more than 100 medals and won 9 international, 18 national and 74 regional titles this year. Athletes are monitored by a multidisciplinary team, which aims to help them achieve better sporting performance.
Among the athletes who stand out, Lucas dos Santos and Maria de Fátima, from weightlifting, and Pedro Nunes, from javelin throwing, shone at the Parapan and Pan-American Games in Santiago 2023, the most important competition of the year. Pedro secured silver on the last day of athletics competitions, Lucas won gold lifting 150kg and Maria won bronze, lifting 110kg in the up to 67kg category.
“The project has been great, I managed to have an excellent sporting year, I qualified a lot and managed to perform in competitions. I improved my position in the world rankings, I am currently ranked fifth. Furthermore, the project helped me mainly when traveling, covering long distances, both nationally and internationally”,
said Maria de Fátima.
