The City Hall of São Paulo announced this Friday (2nd) the holding of the 1st Under-20 Women’s São Paulo Cup. The traditional men’s tournament for under-20 teams will take place in December this year, with 16 teams still to be defined.
The competition will be held in partnership with the FPF (Paulista Football Federation), which organizes the men’s event. The City Hall announced that it will invest R$ 3.5 million.
“The men’s competition has 128 clubs and is the largest base in the world. [a feminina] with 16, but our expectation is that we will expand each year the number of participating clubs and with teams from all over Brazil”, said Mauro Silva, vice-president of the FPF.
For Silva, world champion midfielder with the Brazilian national team in 1994, it is a “historic rescue”.
Nicknamed Copinha, the men’s tournament has been held since 1969, when it was played with four clubs. This year, the 128 were scattered in clashes held in 29 cities in the state. The final always takes place on January 25, the anniversary of the foundation of the capital.
The Paulista Women’s Championship is currently in dispute, with the participation of 16 teams.
In the formula of the first female cup, the associations will be divided into four groups of four teams. The top two advance to the quarterfinals, when the knockout round begins.
