Manaus (AM) – State deputy Mayra Dias (Avante) proposed to the Amazonas State Government the implementation of the Awareness Campaign on Childhood and Adolescent Depression. For the parliamentarian, it is a public health issue that requires immediate attention.
“Childhood and adolescent depression is a challenge that requires the involvement of all sectors of society. Therefore, the campaign seeks to integrate the various state departments, professional councils, universities, non-governmental organizations and other entities linked to child and adolescent mental health. The objective is to carry out educational, cultural, artistic and scientific actions, comprehensively addressing the issue of depression in this age group”,
explained Mayra.
Depression in children and adolescents is a serious concern, impacting physical, cognitive, emotional and social development. It can result in low academic performance, social isolation, risky behaviors, substance abuse, self-harm and even suicide. Furthermore, depression at this stage can increase the risk of mental disorders in adulthood.
The proposed campaign is planned for October, in line with World Mental Health Day on 10 October. The deputy emphasizes that the initiative aims to promote prevention, early diagnosis and adequate treatment, in addition to promoting public policies and comprehensive mental health assistance programs.
“The campaign also aims to encourage prevention, early diagnosis and adequate treatment of depression in children and adolescents, as well as stimulating the development of public policies and comprehensive assistance programs for the population’s mental health”, highlighted the parliamentarian.
