Brazil appoints former senator to Amazon organization – 12/23/2023 – Panel

Brazil opted for a political name to represent it from 2024 onwards in the ACTO (Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization), an entity that brings together eight countries in the region. The country will once again have an indication of this type after three technical directors.
Former senator Vanessa Grazziotin (B-AM PC) will assume the role of executive director of the entity on February 1st, after being elected for a three-year term at a meeting held on November 23rd.
Grazziotin will replace diplomat Carlos Lazary, who has held the position since 2019 and was previously Brazilian ambassador to Peru and Ecuador.
Before her, the last politician to be nominated by Brazil was former federal deputy Marcos Afonso (PT-AC), who served as administrative director between 2004 and 2007.
Founded in 1995, ACTO is made up of Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela. The entity works with programs and activities linked to the environment, indigenous issues, health, science and technology, among others.
The organization has a General Secretariat, which is assisted by two directors, executive and administrative. In August, Brazil hosted an OCTA summit in Belém (PA).
The former senator is a pharmacist and was a federal deputy for three terms. She was a critic of the impeachment of former president Dilma Rousseff, in 2016. In a speech, she stated that the trial was a “crass error” and that it would exact a “bitter price”.
