The plenary of the Chamber of Deputies approved this Tuesday (5) the urgent request to vote on bill 2144/2023, authored by deputy Silvia Waiãpi (PL-AP), which doubles the penalty for sexual crimes against children and teenagers. The request was unanimously approved by the 397 deputies present at the session.

In a video sent to People’s Gazette, the deputy praised the approval of the urgency of the proposal. “We approved the urgency of my project that doubles the penalties in cases of sexual crimes committed against children. This project is in honor of Stefania Teixeira, Maria Clara Caricuna and Sara Lopes, girls from the state of Amapá who were murdered, raped and thrown into the bush,” she said.

In the text of the project, the deputy mentions that sexual crimes against vulnerable people have grown exponentially in recent years and cites an IPEA study that points to the estimated number of “822 thousand rapes in the country per year, which is equivalent to two per minute”.

Silvia also highlights the concern with the fact that “child sexual violence” is always followed by the “result of death”.

“The bill is a cry for help from victims, from their families who suffer painfully, and which must echo in this Brazilian Parliament so that the aim is to eradicate all forms of crimes”, explains the deputy in the project.
