CGU fires Bolsonaro’s former minister for unexcused absences at university

Former minister Abraham Weintraub, who headed the Ministry of Education in the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), was officially fired from the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) this Wednesday (7) for unjustified absences. He was a professor of Higher Education, according to the Federal Comptroller General (CGU).

The dismissal was published in the daily edition of the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU) and indicates that the absences occurred from October 2022 to September 2023. According to the CGU, the penalty was determined in a Disciplinary Administrative Process (PAD) in reason for “habitual non-attendance”.

“In the PAD, which guaranteed the right to full defense and contradictory proceedings, 218 unjustified absences from service at the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) were proven, where he held the position of professor of Higher Education, in the period from October 2022 to September 2023”, says the CGU in a note.

According to the organization, Weintraub is ineligible for a period of eight years. The former minister has not yet commented on the decision. A People’s GazetteWeintraub stated that he will explain the dismissal in a live at 8 pm on his YouTube channel.

According to the Transparency Portal, Weintraub had been a higher education professor since 2014 and was expected to work 40 hours a week. Until this Wednesday (7), his situation was permanently active at the institution.

The panel also points out that Weintraub taught at the institution until 2018, when he began to serve in the Presidency of the Republic in a “special role” until being appointed minister in April 2019 until June 2020.
