Representatives of nine trade union centrals and the UNE (National Union of Students) released a joint note in which they appeal to the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), to veto a bill approved by the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo honoring Colonel Erasmo Dias, exponent of the dictatorship.

As shown by the Panel, the Constitution and Justice Commission of the Assembly approved last Wednesday (24) a project by former Bolsonarist deputy Frederico D’Avila (PL) naming an overpass in Paraguaçu Paulista, Dias’ birthplace, with the name of the colonel, who died in 2010. As it is final in nature, the article now goes to Tarcísio’s sanction or veto.

“We ask that Governor Tarcísio de Freitas veto this absurd project. The people of São Paulo do not deserve to go through the embarrassment and indignity that such a tribute represents. They do not deserve to be exposed to a wound that should already be healed. Dictatorship never again!” note.

The document is signed by Sérgio Nobre (CUT), Miguel Torres (Força Sindical), Ricardo Patah (UGT), Adilson Araújo (CTB), Moacyr Auersvald (Nova Central), Antonio Neto (CSB), Antagoras Lopes (Conlutas), Nilza Pereira ( Intersindical), José Gozze (Pública) and Bruna Brelaz (UNE).

Dias became known for having led the invasion of PUC in 1977, which resulted in the arrest of dozens of students, when he was secretary of Public Security for the state of São Paulo. He was later a federal and state deputy.
