Central Bank has a loss of R$114.2 billion in 2023

The Central Bank had a loss of R$114.2 billion in 2023. The institution released this Thursday (28) the balance sheet approved by the National Monetary Council (CMN). This is the second year in a row that the municipality has presented a negative result. In 2022, the deficit was R$298.5 billion.

Last year, losses of R$123 billion were recorded in foreign exchange operations, such as swap (sale of dollars in the futures market) and variation in international reserves. This occurred because the dollar fell 7.86% in 2023, which caused losses when converting foreign exchange operations into reais, reported the Brazil Agency. The BC also had an operating profit (gains from carrying out the activity) of R$8 billion in 2023.

When adding the exchange rate and operational results, we arrive at a final loss of R$114.2 billion. Of this total, the National Treasury will have to cover R$111.2 billion with public bonds. The remainder, around R$3 billion, must be settled through the reduction of the monetary authority’s own assets.

The last positive result recorded by the BC was in 2021, when a record profit of R$85.9 billion was recorded. At the time, the Central Bank created a profit reserve to cover losses in the following years. However, this reserve was exhausted last year. In 2022, Complementary Law 179 changed the calculation of BC results from semi-annual to annual.
