Celac countries indicate support for Belém to host COP30 – 01/24/2023 – Panel

The final communiqué of the CELAC Summit, released this Tuesday (24), indicates support from the 33 countries of the Latin American and Caribbean region for Brazil’s bid to host the COP30, the United Nations conference on climate change.
The government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) chose Belém as the capital to host the event and is seeking UN support for the country to host the meeting in 2025. The PT member traveled to Buenos Aires to participate in the Community Summit of Latin American and Caribbean States.
In the communiqué, the countries of the region “welcome” the candidacy of the capital of Pará. The support is seen as positive by the Brazilian government, as it signals regional unity around the theme and indicates, from the outset, a comfortable level of support for the proposal to have the city as the stage for the meeting.
Holding the climate meeting in the Amazon was a promise made by Lula during the transition, when he participated in COP27, the event held in Egypt last year.
The presidency of the Climate COP has regional rotation and returns to a Latin American country in 2025. The conference would have taken place in Brazil in 2019, but was canceled by then-president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in 2018, shortly after being elected .
