The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP), is the new person responsible for controlling the National Department of Works Against Droughts (DNOCS) of the Lula government.
It is the first second-tier body, among those coveted by the Centrão, which has a political patronage defined in a negotiation during the Lula government.
Director Fernando Marcondes de Araújo Leão had been exonerated on January 1st. On 13 January, after Lira intervened, his exoneration was rendered null and void and Leão returned to office.
According to sources close to Lira, Luis Tibé, deputy of Avante from Minas Gerais, and he worked together in the Lula government to keep Leão in office.
The body is responsible for actions to combat drought and is often used as a destination for parliamentary amendments. In 2023, its budget is BRL 905 million.
Sought, the Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa, who signed the “reappointment” of Leão, said that it is not his attribution to follow the political negotiation of the positions.
