Maria da Penha law may become a school subject

A Bill (PL) is being discussed in the Porto Alegre City Council that seeks to include the Maria da Penha Law in the curriculum of municipal schools. The article, authored by councilor Hamilton Sossmeier (PTB), provides that the content is part of a mandatory discipline. It will be up to the governing body of the school to define in which school subject the law will be addressed.
The project provides for discussions on violence against women, as well as clarifying young people about the need to file complaints about cases of domestic violence. The article also provides for the disclosure of the Women’s Call Center service – Call 180.
According to Sossmeier, many times these acts of violence are carried out in the students’ own homes.
“The present proposal is in the sense of guiding children and adolescents, within the classrooms, on how to proceed if such violence occurs in their homes, making it possible to train active agents in the fight against such a crime”, argues the councilor.
