The CBB (Brazilian Basketball Confederation) distributed this Thursday (29) a statement in which it withdraws its seal of approval from the LNB (National Basketball League), responsible for organizing the main championship of the sport in Brazil, the NBB (New Basketball Brazil). . As a result, the tournament is no longer recognized by the confederation.

The LNB regretted the decision and published a note in which it ratifies the continuity of the competition. The text says that the member clubs of the league “reiterate their commitment to the promotion and development of the modality”. There is now an impasse, however, in relation to the classification for international competitions.

The letter addressed by the CBB to federations and players says that the LNB tournaments “are no longer official competitions of the CBB or FIBA System”. FIBA is the International Basketball Federation, responsible for organizing championships such as the BCLA (Basketball Champions League Americas), the main South American dispute of the sport.

There is a close relationship between the LNB and the BCLA organization. In April, the final phase of the competition was played in Franca, and the local team won the title in a decision against Flamengo. The two finalists are affiliated to the LNB, as well as the third-placed player in the dispute held in April, Minas Tênis Clube.

The CBB, however, made it clear that it intends to indicate for this and other tournaments, such as the South American League, teams that compete in its championships. The Brazilian Championship of the confederation has been, in practice, a kind of second division, without the main associations. The most recent was won by Cruzeiro earlier this month.

Created in a moment of crisis for teams with the CBB, the club league has organized the NBB since 2009. At the time, the confederation was forced to recognize the championship, held independently, but its current president, Guy Peixoto, had been demonstrating the intention of regaining control of the main national dispute.

In September of last year, he called an assembly to vote precisely on this agenda and had the support of state federations to achieve the result he was looking for. In the communiqué distributed this Thursday, he stated that the CBB is only complying with the “decisions of its General Assembly and its Board of Directors”.

The league and the confederation had been talking since the vote, but Peixoto insisted on his decision and now made it official in a statement. In response, the LNB stated that it “maintains its position of maintaining dialogue in order to find a conciliatory solution”. And the clubs, for now, remain aligned with the league.

Vasco and Botafogo recently signed up to return to the NBB, which has been treated as a success and has a partnership with the NBA – there is an exchange, and the North American basketball league makes Brazilian games available in its application. The directors understand that the championship walks with its own legs and does not need the CBB. The issue is really the international vacancies.
