L, from palmeirense. A, for friend, and letter O, for honest”. Believe me: it may be that Marcossem did not disrespect the norms of the Portuguese language. He probably tried to make a “mesostic acrostic” (see the image below and read the explanation below). If the councilor really tried to apply this form of composition, he didn’t make a mistake. After all the repercussions, he even recorded a video on Facebook and said: “Haven’t you ever played a crossword puzzle?” But it makes no sense to read a mesostic acrostic aloud, explains the teacher. “This versification is very common visually, as it forms the word vertically. That’s why it ended up not working out very well.” ✏️When are acrostics used? “Precisely because it is an expression of creative writing, it is common that we find it in genres such as poems or advertisements”, explains Marina Rocha, writing professor at Colégio e Curso AZ. It’s a curiousity. The national anthem of the Netherlands is also an acrostic: the first letters of each stanza form the name “Willem van Nassov” (a Dutch soldier). Why should we use the plural when talking about indigenous peoples?
