Military personnel from the Institutional Security Office (GSI) guarding the Palácio do Alvorada fired two firearm shots at a driver who tried to break through the blockade in the vicinity of the official residence of the President of the Republic Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva this Saturday morning (24 ).

According to government sources, the shots were merely a warning. The first shot was at the Jaburu Palace, official residence of the Vice President of the Republic, which gives access to the Alvorada area. The driver returned, going over a barrier and having a flat tire.

After a second shot, the driver managed to leave the scene. Security guards failed to write down the vehicle’s license plate and no one was arrested. There are no security cameras on site, but the Federal Police will investigate the case.

President Lula, who had official commitments in Rio de Janeiro, on Friday (23), and returned to Brasília at the end of the day, did not take any risks.

Similar episodes have happened other times in 2011, 2017 and 2020. In none of them, there was a real danger to the physical integrity of the respective presidents. In the last case, in 2020, an apparently drunk man crossed the water mirror that separates the restricted area of Alvorada from the public space, but was detained before the main entrance to the building.
