Bretas, the ‘Moro’ of Rio, will be judged by the CNJ and may be removed from the position of judge – 02/22/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

Federal judge Marcelo Bretas, from the 7^The Federal Court of Rio de Janeiro, will be judged on March 7 by the Internal Affairs of the National Council of Justice (CNJ). He is the target of three disciplinary representations that question his role in Operation Lava Jato.

HUNTING DAY

Bretas, who was known as “the Moro of Rio de Janeiro” for acting in Lava Jato in a similar way to former judge Sergio Moro, may be removed from office with the opening of disciplinary proceedings against him – which is considered likely by superior court judges.

SIGNATURE

One of the representations against the magistrate is signed by the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes. The politician says he is being persecuted by Bretas, who would not obey the principle of impartiality when acting in processes involving him.

OTHER SIDE

Bretas is also cited in three plea bargains in which the defendants report on his performance in plea bargain agreements.

In them, the judge appears trying to direct defendants to sign a plea bargain, which is prohibited by law.

In the heydays of Lava Jato, Bretas ordered the arrest of suspects such as former Rio de Janeiro governor Sergio Cabral and businessman Eike Batista.

With an expansive profile, the judge even took a ride on the official plane of the then governor of Rio de Janeiro, Wilson Witzel, to go to the inauguration of Jair Bolsonaro, in 2019. And he even released a photo. In 2020, he was sentenced to censorship for participating in a political act with then-president Jair Bolsonaro.

In total, eleven CNJ advisers will judge Bretas. The case’s rapporteur is the national justice inspector, Luis Felipe Salomão.
