Considered the bread that carries Curitiba’s identity, the Bread of Rye won its own festival. The Blumenau Rye Bread and Sausage Festival takes place from the 8th to the 20th of August in Curitiba. During this period, the 20 participating bakeries will serve sandwiches prepared with the famous “black bread” and Linguiça Blumenau, a sausage very typical of tables in the capital of Paraná, at the unique price of R$ 19 each.

The event is an initiative of the Union of the Bakery and Confectionery Industry of the State of Paraná (Sipcep) in partnership with the Curitiba Honesta platform. Traditional establishments in the sector in the city participate in the action, such as America, Piegel and Kaminski bakeries.

“This is an event to draw attention and value the work that is carried out in bakeries in our city. We chose Broa de Centeio and Linguiça Blumenau because they are two very traditional products in bakeries here. In the past, in every bakery in Curitiba, you could find Bread of Rye, Bread of Water and Sausage Blumenau”, comments Vilson Borgman, president of Sipcep.

Bread of Rye walks to become Intangible Cultural Heritage of Curitiba

According to Borgman, the union works to make the Bread of Rye an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Curitiba. A preparation brought by immigrants who arrived in the capital in the 19th century, the first historical records of bread in the city date back to 1867.

The survey was carried out by Claudine Botelho and Oscar Luzardo, who together wrote the book “Origem, notoriety and historical continuity of Breads of Rye in Curitiba”. The research that led to the book is the basis for the process that seeks to make the Broa de Centeio Intangible Cultural Heritage of the city.

According to Borgman, still this month of August the documentation will be sent to the Cultural Heritage Municipal Council of Curitiba. In March of this year, the Cultural Foundation of Curitiba (FCC) – after provocation by councilor Tico Kuzma (PSD) – gave a favorable opinion to Broa de Centeio as a candidate for registration of the city’s Intangible Heritage.

“We expect this title later this year and the festival only reinforces and demonstrates the cultural importance of Bread of Rye for our city”, evaluates the councilor.
