‘Golden August’: campaign launches humanized space for mothers to breastfeed

With the theme “Support breastfeeding and make a difference for working mothers and fathers”, the Government of Amazonas, through the Health Department of Amazonas (SES-AM), held, this Thursday (03), at the Maternidade Azilda Marreiro, the opening of “Golden August”, a month that encourages breastfeeding in the state. This year, the maternity hospital created a humanized space for working mothers to breastfeed their children and donate to the Human Milk Bank.

The executive secretary of SES-AM, Luan Pedrosa, pointed out that the Ministry of Health recommends that, up to six months of life, the baby be fed exclusively with breast milk in order to have strong growth and healthy development.

“Breastfeeding is important for cognitive and physical development. With this, we have the development of motherhood that seeks to embrace and ensure that access to the health service of working mothers and fathers who cannot find this space to breastfeed or who are hospitalized improves the bond between mother and baby”,

The unit’s director, Elcinei Sampaio, explained that the campaign’s target audience is working women. But in addition to breastfeeding, the goal is to encourage the donation of breast milk.

Elcinei emphasized that, this year, the maternity completes 20 years of operation, in addition to being one of the pioneers to inaugurate the Breast Milk Bank in Amazonas.

“This current management has observed this need for mothers who work and breastfeed, to continue working even while breastfeeding their child. So, we created a programmed space for these mothers. Even if she doesn’t breastfeed, she has a space to empty her breasts and be able to take that milk home or donate it to the maternity ward”,

he said.

The space caters to professionals who work at the Eliameme Rodrigues Emergency Service (SPA) and the Child Care Center (Caic) in Cidade Nova.

Nurse Patrícia Rocha, who works in the maternity surgery center, is the mother of a 3-month-old baby, and was thrilled with the launch.

Patrícia said that when she had her first child, she didn’t have that welcome of a safe place to breastfeed and donate.

“During the pandemic, I would go to the shift crying, express milk and throw it all away because I couldn’t give it to my first child or another baby. Now, we will be able to take it for our baby and for donation, because we know that many children whose mothers cannot breastfeed. Fortunately I can give my baby drops of love”,

According to the Ministry of Health, human milk is capable of reducing by up to 13% the mortality of children under 5 years of age from preventable causes. This is the best food for newborns, as it provides immunological protection against infectious diseases and also acts in emotional and psychological development.

In addition, it favors the bond with the mother and is also important for the mother in the postpartum period, preventing bleeding and preventing breast cancer.

Amazonas has three Human Milk Banks (BLH): Ana Braga maternity, Azilda Marreiro maternity and Balbina Mestrinho maternity, which are also responsible for collection, processing and distribution to babies.
