Brazilian Wrestling will have nine athletes in the World Senior Wrestling Championship, to be played from September 15th to 24th, in Belgrade, Serbia. The tournament is the first chance to guarantee a place in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Each of the 18 Olympic categories will classify five athletes. The first and second placed, in addition to the two third and the winner of a match between the fifth placed. The Brazilian delegation will be formed by the following Greco-Roman style athletes: Joilson Júnior 77kg category of Greco-Roman style; Ronisson Brandão category 87kg; Igor Queiroz 97kg and Eduard Soghomonyan 130kg, Olympic athlete at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Games. In men’s freestyle, Cesar Alvan competes in the 74kg category. In women’s freestyle, the vacancies will be sought: Kamila Barbosa of the 50kg division, Grabriela Pedro, 68kg, in addition to Giullia Penalber, 57kg, and Laís Nunes, 62kg category, athlete in the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Games.
Giullia Penalber and Laís Nunes will be seeded in their respective weight divisions, Giullia is currently fourth in the world ranking in the 62kg division, and Laís occupies the eighth place under 62kg. The athletes carry out the final preparation phase in Germany and France, before heading to Serbia.
“We are carrying out excellent preparation with athletes who will be at the World Championships. This exchange allows us to experience this pre-competitive stage with the reality we will find at the Worlds. That way we can make the necessary adjustments for the Championship in search of the Olympic vacancy. One less place will be disputed in the 2023 World Championship and one more place in the World Pre-Olympics in 2024, so I think that the seeding will not be a crucial factor as in the last Olympic selection”explained Giullia, 3rd place in the World Pre-Olympics for the Tokyo Games that classified two athletes in 2021.
Understand the change and how the classification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be
The tryouts for the Paris Games underwent a single change. The World Championship now gives five places, until the last edition of the Games the tournament classified six athletes per category. In addition to the four medalists, the two fifth placed guaranteed a spot. This year, the two fifth placed will have to fight for the place. The same happens with the two third-placed teams in the world Pre-Olympic that takes place in 2024. For Tokyo, only the Pre-Olympic finalists guaranteed a spot. As for the Paris Olympic Games, the third-placed teams will fight each other for a spot. Check below the tournaments in which Brazilians will seek places in Paris 2024.
- Five places in each of the 18 Olympic categories (Gold, silver, two bronze medalists and winner of the match between the fifth places) = 90 places.
