The second division of the Brazilian Championship is the competition that records the highest number of fouls per match: 30.34, on average.
The conclusion comes from a study by Cies (International Center for Sports Studies), a Swiss institute, made with data from the companies StatsPerform and Wyscout, which analyzed the number of fouls committed in 71 world championships, on five continents.
The research period runs from February 20, 2023 to February 20, 2024, thus encompassing all 380 matches from Series B last year, whose champion was Vitória.
The Brazilian Segundona is the only competition in which the number of infractions exceeds three dozen per match. In second place is the Serbian Championship (29.99 fouls per game) and in third, the Greek Championship (29.72).
At the other end of the list is the Dutch Championship. Only the competition of 18 clubs in which Ajax and PSV play has, on average, a number of fouls less than 20 per match: 19.96.
The two other championships with the lowest amount of infractions per game are the Norwegian (20.02) and the Australian (20.93).
The elite division of the Brazilian Championship (Série A) is not far behind the Segundona. There were 28.53 fouls per match in the 2023 edition, which leaves it sixth in the ranking of the most fouled championships.
In South America, there is no country where more infractions are committed per game than Brazil. In the Argentine Championship, for example, the average is 24.07. The Paraguayan Championship has the least number of fouls in the region: 21.88 fouls per match.
In the five main European leagues (first divisions of Germany, Spain, France, England and Italy), the one with the highest number of fouls per match is the Spanish Championship (25.65) and the one with the lowest, the English (22.12) .

The study also presented the champion championships in the distribution of cards by arbitration.
In yellow, both Série A and Série B in Brazil are in the top 5, with an average per match, respectively, of 5.59 and 5.57.
Above the two Brazilian divisions appear the Uruguayan Championship (6.07 yellow cards per game) and the Bolivian Championship (5.94). Fifth on the list is the Peruvian Championship (5.50).
Japanese referees are the ones who hand out yellow cards the least: 2.73 per duel, in the second division, and 2.82, in the first.
The Second League in Japan has the fewest players sent off: the average number of red cards shown per match is 0.10, that is, one athlete “goes to the shower” every ten games.
And the Bolivian Championship is at the top of those that record the most red cards: 0.61 per match. In the Brazilian Series A, the average is 0.32 and in the Series B, 0.31.
Finally, the study reveals that referees in Brazilian leagues are among those who most offer extra time to games due to stoppages (care due to injuries, goal celebrations, substitutions, etc.).
On average, the additions are 12min42s per game in Series A and 12min35s in Series B. Furthermore, only in two competitions in the Middle East: the Qatari Championship (13min49s) and the Saudi Championship (13min48s).
