The trip of the Presidency’s international adviser, Celso Amorim, to Venezuela, was an initiative of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who intends to consolidate himself as a mediator for global problems at the beginning of his term.

Also part of this policy are Lula’s suggestion of creating a “peace club” to end the war in Ukraine and the gestures of mediation for the crisis in Nicaragua.

Amorim met this Wednesday (8) with the Venezuelan dictator, Nicolás Maduro, and also with opposition leaders.

The former Brazilian foreign minister, however, avoided contact with better-known figures in the anti-Maduro camp, such as former presidential candidate Henrique Capriles and self-declared interim president Juan Guaidó. The assessment in the Lula government is that today they are decadent and unrepresentative leaders.

In their place, Amorim spoke, among others, with the lawyer and former deputy Gerardo Blyde, who has participated in the negotiating table between the dictatorship and the Venezuelan opposition.
