In a rare manifestation in a critical tone towards Venezuela, the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) expressed this Tuesday (21) “concern” with the situation of human rights in the neighboring country.
The statement was given by minister André Simas, a diplomat who takes care of the area, during a session of the UN Human Rights Council, in Geneva. He was commenting on the report made on the country by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Austrian Volker Turk.
“Brazil thanks the High Commissioner for the report and shares his concern for the situation of human rights in Venezuela,” said Simas.
The diplomat added that the country follows “closely” the issue of human rights and “reiterates its willingness to cooperate to develop joint initiatives in the country.”
At the same time, he praised the government of Nicolás Maduro for allowing Turk access to opponents and members of civil society during his visit to Venezuela in late January.
Criticism of the Maduro dictatorship was common during the Presidency of Jair Bolsonaro (PL). Since Lula took office, however, Brazil has sought to position itself as a mediator in the crisis in the neighboring country. At the beginning of the month, international adviser Celso Amorim was in Caracas to talk with Maduro and some opponents.
