“Brazil knew fascism” and returned to “recover democracy”

When participating in the 59th Congress of the National Union of Students (UNE), President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) once again linked the government of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to fascism and went so far as to say that he returned to “recover democracy”.

“I came back not because I wanted to come back, but because the people came back with me. To recover democracy and the quality of life of the people. Not long ago, Brazil learned what fascism is. In four years we have seen how democracy is destroyed. I hope that we have learned the lesson that it is democracy that allows us to live in diversity”, said the president.

Former Uruguayan president Pepe Mujica, an ally of the PT, also participated in the event and spoke to those present. For the former chief executive of the neighboring country, Latin America needs to unite.

In addition to them, ministers Camilo Santana (Education), Ana Moser (Sports), Márcio Macêdo (General Secretariat) and Luciana Santos (Science and Technology) participated in the UNE event. Members of Congress, such as Deputy Jandira Feghali (PCdoB – RJ), Deputy Orlando Silva (PcdoB-SP) and Senator Randolfe Rodrigues (without party), also attended.

Also this Thursday, Lula and Mujica met at the Planalto Palace. The former Uruguayan president was also received at the Ministry of Education by Santana. “Both exchanged views on the South American political context and on the resumption of regional integration; on the potential for trade with greater added value as a way of combating de-industrialization and promoting technological development; and on the region’s role in current global geopolitics,” said Planalto in a note released about the meeting.

Barroso at the UNE Congress

It was at the 59th UNE Congress that Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), stated that he faced and defeated “Bolsonarism”. The statement was given on Wednesday (12).

“Nothing that is happening here is strange to me. I’ve already faced the dictatorship and I’ve already faced Bolsonarism. I’m not afraid of boos because we have a country to build. We defeated Bolsonarism to allow democracy and the free manifestation of all people”, he said, after being booed because of his performance in court cases, such as the nursing floor and the impeachment of former president Dilma Rousseff (PT). , in 2016.

The speech came into the sights of opposition deputies, who are considering filing an impeachment process against the magistrate because they understand that he “performed party-political activity”, a crime of responsibility foreseen for ministers of the STF, and that he be declared suspected of participating of the trial of all cases involving former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and allies.

In response, the Court issued a note saying that Barroso was referring to “the popular vote” when he said that “bolsonarismo” was defeated.

Barroso said in a note, this Thursday (13), that by using the expression “we defeat Bolsonarism”, he was referring to “the coup-mongering and violent extremism that manifested itself on January 8 and that corresponds to a minority”.

“I never intended to offend the former President’s 58 million voters or to criticize a conservative and democratic worldview, which is perfectly legitimate. I have the greatest respect for all voters and for all democratic politicians, whether they are conservative, liberal or progressive”, said the magistrate, in a new note released by the STF.
