Brazil defends 21-year unbeaten record against Uruguay

Brazil faces Uruguay this Tuesday (17), at 9 pm, at the Centenário Stadium, in Montevideo, in the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. On the field, Fernando Diniz’s men will defend an unbeaten record of 21 years against South American rivals.

Brazil’s last defeat to Uruguay occurred on July 1, 2001, in a qualifying game played in the neighboring country. On that occasion, the hosts won 1-0, with a goal from Federico Magallanes.

Since then, 12 matches have been played, with five draws and seven Brazilian victories. The teams faced each other in the Qualifiers, Copa América, Confederations Cup and friendlies. Brazil has four consecutive victories.

The last time Brazil and Uruguay faced each other was on October 14, 2021, also in the Qualifiers, but for the 2022 World Cup. On that occasion, in a match held at the Arena da Amazônia, the Brazilians won 4-1 with goals from Raphinha (2), Neymar and Gabigol — Luis Suárez scored for the Uruguayans.

With the 1-1 draw against Venezuela, in Cuiabá, last Thursday (12), the Brazilian team fell to second place in the qualifying table with seven points, and saw Argentina take the lead in the competition with nine points and 100% utilization. The Uruguayans are in fourth place with four points.
