The match between the teams of Belgium and Sweden played this Monday (16) in Brussels, for the Eurocup qualifiers, was suspended at half-time after a shooting attack in the Belgian capital that left two Swedish citizens dead.
In a post on the social network X, UEFA confirmed that, following the attacks, the two teams and police authorities were consulted, with the decision to suspend the match. UEFA has not yet announced when the match will resume.
Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo used the same social network to pay condolences to the victims and the Swedish government. “As close partners, the fight against terrorism is joint,” he said.
Belgium raised its alert for terrorist attacks to the highest level after a man published a video on social media admitting the attack and identifying himself as a member of the Islamic State group.
In a post on social media, the Swedish football federation said Belgian police had asked Sweden fans to remain in the stadium for security reasons. The attack occurred at a distance of around six kilometers from the stadium.
The game between the two teams was tied 1-1 and was not resumed after the end of the first half.
