Bolsonaro’s ally praises Lula for bringing together governors – 01/27/2023 – Panel

The governor of Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado (União), one of the main allies of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) during his term, praised the initiative of president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to value the relationship with allies even opposition.

“In less than 30 days, Lula schedules a meeting with all 27 governors, saying that the attitude will be one of openness, that no decision will be taken without the participation of the governors, that he makes a point of being present in the states, even inviting himself to go in the palaces. It is an initiative worthy of applause”, he praises.

For Caiado, Lula shows he knows how to do politics, signaling that he understands that the campaign is over, leaving the podium in 2022 and governing in partnership with the states.

Caiado was one of the governors who stood by Bolsonaro at times when most state chief executives were in open opposition. The governor of Goiás broke up with the former president during the fight against the pandemic, but ended up reconciling.

Lula’s ally, the governor of Espírito Santo, Renato Casagrande (PSB), also praised the meeting. “It marks the resumption of the debate on federal issues”, he says.

Lula remained listening to the governors’ demands until 2 pm, when he invited them to lunch at the Itamaraty. In general, he heard a concern about the loss of revenue and increased expenses at the initiative of the National Congress.

The president made Finance Minister Fernando Haddad available to coordinate a group to discuss ICMS losses. In an articulation with Bolsonaro, Congress limited the tax to make fuel cheaper.

Lula said this Friday (27) that he considers it possible to ‘settle’ the issue of ICMS with the governors, who complain about the drop in collection after the entry into force of the law that limited the rate of this tax on fuel.

The speech took place during a meeting with the 27 governors at the Planalto Palace.
