President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and the governors of the 27 federative units of Brazil signed this Friday (27) a letter in defense of democracy. The document was named “Letter of Brasilia” and was released after the meeting held at the Planalto Palace this morning.

“Democracy is a non-negotiable value. Only through the dialogue it favors will we be able to prioritize economic growth with the reduction of our inequalities and the social ills that today impose suffering and hopelessness on a significant portion of the Brazilian population”, says the letter released by Planalto. The demonstration takes place almost 20 days after the acts of vandalism that took place at the headquarters of the Three Powers, in Brasília, on January 8.

Lula and the governors also announced the creation of a Federation Council to “define a permanent agenda for dialogue and agreement around themes defined as priorities by the federated entities.” The entity will be formed by representatives of the Union, states and municipalities.

The Union and the states stated that they intend to “rescue public policy tools that facilitate shared management of public resources” that favor regional development. “All our efforts will be guided by the development agenda to overcome unemployment, inflation, hunger and poverty in an integrated and permanently negotiated agenda”, says the document.
