Bolsonaro says he sees no attack on democracy against ambassadors – 06/26/2023 – Politics

Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said it was “injustice to speak of an attack on democracy” to describe the meeting with ambassadors that is the central point of the action at the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) that could lead to his ineligibility for eight years.

Bolsonaro also said he hoped that his judgment at the TSE would follow previous case law and not accept new evidence – the PDT, author of the action, included in the process with the court’s approval the coup draft found with former minister Anderson Torres.

The former president spoke to the press after a meeting with PL deputies at the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo, this Monday (26). The judgment session at the TSE will resume this Tuesday (27), with the rapporteur’s vote, starting at 7 pm.

Bolsonaro was welcomed in the Alesp garage by the president of the House, André do Prado (PL), and by other state and federal deputies, but he was soon surrounded by a group of supporters, who took pictures and shouted “myth”.

The action at the TSE began to be analyzed on Thursday (22) and the perspective is that the trial will only end next Thursday (29).

The trial was suspended after the reading of the report by the Inspector General of the Electoral Justice, Minister Benedito Gonçalves, and the manifestations of the lawyers of the PDT, author of the action, and of the former representative.

The content and circumstances of the meeting with ambassadors held by the then president last year are at the heart of the electoral action that began to be judged by the Electoral Justice.

At the time, less than three months before the first round, Bolsonaro made false and distorted statements about the electoral process. He also sought to discredit TSE ministers.

According to current legislation, if convicted, he will be able to run again in 2030, aged 75, thus staying away from three elections until then (one of them being the 2026 national).
