Bolsonaro is quoted in 45% of decisions about fake news – 06/27/2023 – Panel

Former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) appears as a “party” or “involved” in 45% of the decisions and judgments of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) in actions related to fake news and disinformation.

The survey, carried out by the Center for Judicial Research (CPJ) of the Association of Brazilian Magistrates (AMB), in partnership with Unesco, covers the period between the beginning of the Bolsonaro government (January 1, 2019) and the date of the second round of the presidential election (October 30 last year).

In this interval, Bolsonaro was mentioned in 80 out of 179 decisions, according to the study “What is disinformation in the Brazilian Judiciary? An analysis of the jurisprudence of the superior courts on fake news”.

Bolsonaro and allies were investigated throughout his term in inquiries into fake news and digital militias. The former president is expected to be declared ineligible by the TSE for spreading misinformation about electronic voting machines at a meeting with foreign ambassadors last year.
