BNDES and SP City Hall advance an agreement worth R$2.5 billion to produce 1,300 electric buses – 10/18/2023 – Panel

The BNDES (National Bank for Social Development) and the City of São Paulo advanced in approving financing of R$2.5 billion for the production of 1,300 electric buses.

The bank’s president, Aloizio Mercadante, and the mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), met this Wednesday (18) at the BNDES headquarters, in Rio de Janeiro, to discuss the issue. The financing must be approved in October, at the institution’s next board meeting.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) will be invited to sign the contract and make the first deliveries.

“President Lula’s orientation is this: republican relationship, working for the country and the people, with all governors and mayors, and us boosting the generation of jobs and income and the country’s growth”, says Mercadante.

The mayor’s target program includes the forecast that 20% of the municipal fleet will be made up of electric buses by the end of next year, that is, around 2,600 vehicles of this type.

The expectation is that the issue of electrification of the public transport fleet in São Paulo will be present in next year’s municipal election.

As the Panel showed, federal deputy Guilherme Boulos (PSOL), who will run for Mayor of São Paulo with Nunes, met with Mercadante to discuss the same topic in June. In April, the psolista was in Santiago, Chile, which has one of the largest fleets of electric buses in Latin America.

The parliamentarian has argued that, in addition to reducing carbon emissions, the electric transition of fleets also results in a reduction in noise pollution.
