Lula welcomes agreement between Venezuelan dictatorship and opposition for elections

President Lula (PT) and friend of the Venezuelan dictator, Nicolás Maduro, praised the agreement between the Venezuelan regime and the opposition to hold “free elections” in the second half of 2024. Maduro is known for breaking several previous agreements made with the opposition.

“I welcome the signing of the Agreements for the Promotion of Political Rights and Electoral Guarantees and for the Guarantee of the Nation’s Vital Interests between the government of Venezuela and the opposition in the country”, said Lula on the social network.

The agreement was signed between the two parties this Tuesday (17) in Bridgetown, capital of Barbados.

The terms of the agreement establish that the Venezuelan elections must be monitored by observers from the European Union (EU), the United Nations (UN) and other international entities.

Furthermore, it provides for the “promotion of a favorable public discourse and political climate, the repudiation of violence in political exercise and the exhortation for all political actors to respect electoral regulations”.

According to the Norwegian diplomat responsible for mediating the agreement, Dag Nylander, a second document was also signed between the parties with the aim of preserving “Venezuelan assets abroad, defending national sovereignty and ending international sanctions imposed on the Venezuelan State”.

The agreement is a response to the North American government that would have conditioned the end of sanctions on the holding of clean elections in the country.

In addition to the USA, Norway and Brazil, representatives from the Netherlands, Russia and Colombia participated in the negotiations.
