Blocão de Lira will be led by leftist parties – 04/12/2023 – Politics

The newly created bloc of the Chamber of Deputies that unites the PP, of the President of the House, Arthur Lira (AL), and parties from the allied base of the government Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), will be commanded, initially, by deputies from the PSB and PDT.

The group will be formed by PP, União Brasil, PSB, PDT, PSDB-Cidadania, Solidariedade, Patriota and Avante. In total, there will be 175 deputies – making it the largest force in the Chamber.

On the Casa website, the sum of the parties results in 173 parliamentarians, but party leaders count on the incorporation of two other deputies to the block.

There will be a rotation between the subtitles to define the leadership of the group. The first leader will be Felipe Carreras (PSB), followed by André Figueiredo (PDT), both from Lula’s base parties.

“These parties have a convergence with the democratic agenda and we want, of course, to make a broad front that guarantees governance for the federal government and that we have, here within Parliament, this time of consensus on agendas that are important for Brazil”, said Figueiredo.

Carreras also reinforced the issue of governance, stating that it is a bloc that will “try to help President Lula to pave the way for governance and have a solid base here in the Chamber.”

Deputy Elmar Nascimento, leader of União Brasil, also stated that the bloc symbolizes that there is no interest in creating uproars with the federal government.

“To signify that there is no interest in creating, especially with the government, any kind of stir, we deputies who are represented here by their leaders, make up a single block here in the House that will have a forum for discussion in this collegiate of leaders and decisions always thinking about the best interests of the Brazilian population”, he said.

The creation of the block was sealed in a meeting this Wednesday morning. The initiative is a reaction by the President of the House to the creation of a bloc that split the center and united Republicans, MDB, PSD, Podemos and PSC (with 142 parliamentarians) and that emptied Lira’s internal power.

The background of this movement involves the dispute for power within Congress, the strength that each group will have in relation to the federal government and the succession of the president of the Chamber —which will take place in February 2025.

On a social network, Lira said that the block “is a demonstration of commitment and responsibility towards the country”.

“Let’s add, not confront. Act together in the construction of policies in favor of society. Respecting opinions and diversity. This is the best way to appreciate important projects for the country”, he continued.
