Bank slips paid before 4:30 pm will be cleared on the same day from March 15th. The new modality, called T+0, will be part of daily operations together with compensations with a longer term, T+1, of one business day.

The change, however, will depend on the company or service operator’s contract with the financial institution. Payments made after this time will be cleared on the next business day. The modality encompasses 136 banks and will be mandatory.

Febraban (Brazilian Federation of Banks) states that nothing changes for those who pay the bill. The change will occur for the creditor of the document, who will receive the money.

Walter Faria, deputy director of services at Febraban, says that the change will bring agility and benefit commerce, especially online commerce, which will be able to make faster deliveries and receive earlier.

“Initially, the estimate is that around 57% of invoices can be processed on the same day, while 43% within the T+1 period. When it is fully implemented, the idea is to begin studies to bring all invoice settlement to the deadline D+0.”

In 2023, 4.2 billion bank bills were paid, totaling R$5.8 trillion moved in the country. Any natural or legal person can make a charge using bank slips, just have a bank account and contract the service with the bank.

Bank slips were created in October 1993, by the Central Bank, and came into force in January 1994. In July of the same year, Brazil implemented the Real Plan, which changed the currency and stabilized inflation.
