Proposition also establishes penalty for those who discourage vaccination
Senator Angelo Coronel’s Bill of Law (PSD-BA) is currently being discussed in the Senate and provides for a penalty of up to eight years in prison for anyone who does not submit to mandatory vaccination in a public health emergency situation without just cause. The PL was presented in 2020, during the Covid-19.
The project provides for the inclusion of an article in the Penal Code that would punish with imprisonment from one to three years anyone who “omits or opposes, without just cause, as parents or legal guardians, the mandatory vaccination of children or adolescent, in a situation of public health emergency”.
The proposal also provides for a penalty of two to eight years in prison, with a fine, for anyone who does not get vaccinated in a public health emergency. The same punishment is intended for anyone who spreads “false news” about vaccines “or their effectiveness” and anyone who discourages vaccination. If the agent is a public official, the penalty is doubled.
Despite the congressman’s intention, the project has been widely disapproved in a poll available on the Senate website. Out of a total of 128,000 voters, 118,000 voted against the proposal and only 10,000 supported the project, equivalent to just over 8% approval.
The PL, with number 5555, received the most recent update from last month, when it passed through the Legislative Secretariat of the Federal Senate and had its continuity confirmed. Since May 2021, the project has been in process together with PLs 13/2021, 15/2021, 25/2021, 505/2021 and 1140/2021.
