Bill defends inclusion of climate education in the public education network in Amazonas

Proposal by congresswoman Joana Darc seeks to add subject as multidisciplinary transversal content

Manaus (AM) – Authored by deputy Joana Darc (União Brasil), Bill (PL) No. 1,313/2023, which is being processed in the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas (Aleam), intends to include the theme of Climate Education in the teaching program of the network’s schools public sector of the State, which will be taught as transversal multidisciplinary content, in the various subjects that make up the curriculum.

Climate education is the theme that will enable individuals to build social values, knowledge, attitudes, skills and competencies regarding prevention, mitigation, adaptation and resilience actions related to climate change.

For the parliamentarian, considering the students’ curriculum would be extremely important, mainly due to the latest events in Amazonas and around the world.

“We had a historic drought in 2023, and the possible causes need to be debated in the classroom. Droughts happen every year in our State, but the last few seasons have had a great influence on the climate crises that hit the world, and climate education would be a solution to teach the next generations how to deal with and, above all, alleviate this problem”,

he said.

Themes involved

According to the text of the proposal, the development of Climate Education will cover, among other aspects, the following themes: global warming, geopolitics and climate; changes in climate, local fauna and flora; sustainability; biodiversity and environmental changes; between others.

If approved by Aleam and sanctioned by the Government of Amazonas, the integrity of the biosphere, as well as pollution and impacts on the climate, the history of climate movements, environmentalism and sustainable practices will also be the topics that will enter the school curriculum.

Joana Darc, author of the proposal, advocates that teachers be trained to guarantee the teaching process for students.

“In addition to the inclusion of this theme in the classrooms of public schools in Amazonas, it is interesting to train education professionals, in order to guarantee a teaching-learning process in dialogue and in line with the most relevant and urgent themes of today” ,

highlighted.

Lectures and external activities

Public teaching units in Amazonas will be able to receive expert guests to give lectures and promote other actions linked to the issue of climate crises. Schools will also be able to carry out external activities such as field activities, period of experience with nature in order to provide greater contact with the environment.

The proposal highlights that teaching units may include internal activities with the maintenance of school gardens with agroforestry principles, cisterns to capture rainwater, compost bins and the efficient management of solid waste.
