After a judgment carried out on Tuesday (6), the 5th Disciplinary Commission of the STJD (Superior Court of Justice) decided to ban striker Ygor Catatau, 27, from football. Sampaio Corrêa denounced by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in the wake of Operation Maximum Penalty, by the Public Ministry of Goiás —which denounced a match manipulation scheme for illicit gain on betting sites.

In addition to the striker, currently in football in Iran —he may, for the time being, pursue his career outside Brazil—, lateral Mateusinho, 24, currently in Cuiabá, and defender Paulo Sérgio, 34, today in Operário, were suspended for 720 days and received fines of R$70,000 each.

Also a former Sampaio Corrêa athlete, defensive midfielder André Queixo, currently playing in Iraqi football, received a fine of R$50,000. Defender Allan Godói, another who defended Sampaio Corrêa, today at Operário, was acquitted by the court —in the case of the defender, the auditors considered that the evidence was insufficient to prove his participation in the manipulation scheme.

According to MP-GO, Catatau co-opted four other players, and all of them would have received R$ 10,000 with the promise that another R$ 140,000 would be sent to him if a penalty was committed in the match against Londrina, for Série B of last year’s Brazilian Championship — in the game, Mateusinho committed a penalty.

The discovery of the scheme occurred after the apprehension of Mateusinho’s cell phone, in which there was a WhatsApp group in which the players mentioned the amounts to be received.

There is still an appeal to the Plenary of the STJD for all cases judged by the court this Tuesday.

The five former Sampaio Corrêa players were denounced based on the following articles:

  • 191 – Fail to comply with, or make it difficult to comply with, general or special competition regulations;
  • 242 – Giving or promising undue advantage to a member of a sports entity, manager, coach, athlete or any natural person mentioned so that, in any way, influence the result of the game, competition or equivalent;
  • 243 – Deliberately act in a way that is detrimental to the defending team;
  • 243-A – Acting contrary to sporting ethics, with the aim of influencing the result of the match, competition or equivalent.

What the athletes say

Paulo Sérgio denies involvement in the match-fixing scheme. According to MP-GO, he received R$ 10,000 from the gang that organized the betting schemes. The athlete, however, claims that the amount received would refer to online poker matches.

The report was unable to get in touch with the defenses of Ygor Catatau, Mateusinho, André Queixo and Allan Godói until the publication of this text.

Other judgments of the STJD

This was the second wave of players punished by the STJD as a result of the advancement of the Maximum Penalty Operation by the Public Ministry of Goiás.

Last week, another ten players were judged by the court and received different penalties for their involvement in the betting scheme.

Marcos Vinicius Alves Barreira, known as Romário, was banned and will still have to pay a fine of R$ 25,000.

Gabriel Tota (Ypiranga-RS) and Matheus Gomes (without a club) were also banned and received fines of R$30,000 and R$10,000, respectively.

Paulo Miranda (without a club) received a 1,000-day ban and a fine of R$ 70,000. Gabriel Domingos (without club) was suspended for 720 days and fined R$ 15,000. Moraes (Aparecidense-GO) was suspended for 760 days and fined BRL 55,000. Fernando Neto (São Bernardo) and Kevin Lomónaco (Red Bull Bragantino) received 380-day hooks and fines of R$ 15 thousand and R$ 25 thousand, respectively.

Already Eduardo Bauermann (Santos) got hook 12 games. Igor Cariús (Sport) was acquitted.
