The Bertha Foundation is accepting applications for the Bertha Challenge 2024, a program that encourages investigative journalists and activists to develop projects related to misinformation and the climate crisis. The South African organization offers grants of up to US$79,900 (R$408,000).

The foundation, which focuses on defending socioeconomic justice and human rights, proposes that projects answer the following question: “How is disinformation manipulating and distorting the impact of the climate crisis caused by human actions?”.

The material needs to be translated into English and should be freely available after the end of the scholarship, which lasts for one year and includes up to US$ 10,000 (R$ 51,000) for the development of the project. Scholarship holders who develop work together may receive an additional US$ 5,000 (R$ 25,500).

The total value of the scholarship also includes up to US$ 64,900 per year (R$ 331,000), offered to cover the salary equivalent to that received in the vehicle or organization in which the participants work. A bond with an organization in the country of origin is one of the requirements to participate in the public notice.

Applications for the program are open until July 4th of this year and require an English version of the CV, contacts of two to four references and a signed agreement with the home organization. Interested parties should also fill out an online form and submit examples of past work.

For selection, collaborations between journalists and activists will be prioritized, but individual projects will also be considered. More information is available on the Bertha Challenge 2024 website.
